Science fiction writers have often confronted tradition with modernity, frequently holding omnipresent technology to account and warning against humanity’s growing dependence on the artificial worlds it creates, worlds without which it can no longer function normally. Marta Sobiecka takes this even further. She presents a futuristic fusion of metaphysics and cyberspace, constructs holographic substitutes for apparitions designed for mass consumption, and in her visions ventures into truly 'heretical' portrayals of the soul, one independent of its 'boisterous skull' as Ray Bradbury might put it.

Her recurring fascination with Japan finds a particularly meaningful and substantive justification here. It is, after all, the Land of the Rising Sun that has been striving for decades to merge mysticism, religion, and ancestral beliefs with a dehumanized future.

Yet Sobiecka refrains from judgment. She offers no grades for the schizophrenically fractured reality we inhabit. There is no moral parable here, no ethical lifeline for the reader adrift in the mental turbulence of the 21st century. Why? For a simple reason. Marta Sobiecka takes her readers seriously. She allows them to make their own choices, to follow their own paths, just like the characters in her stories.
